Storytime: Bobson & Thievery

Bobson loved chips.  He didn’t get many potato chips in his school lunch. He thought his life would be better if he had potato chips.  His mum just packed healthy stuff.

Sometimes he traded his homemade applesauce or thick sandwich for chips with the other kids.

One Monday he saw a sandwich bag of chips on Tailor’s desk.  Bobson just reached over and took a handful of them out of the bag.

Sara, out of the corner of her eye, saw him take the chips, and stored it in her memory banks.

Bobson munched the chips, they were delicious.  Later as he walked to his Grandma’s house, he began thinking about those chips.  They weren’t his.  No one had seen him take any, or had they?  What if they had? What of his good reputation?

Then he thought God certainly had seen.  He knew God was with him always and loved him to bits. He also knew God would never make a decision for him.  Stealing chips was all on him.  So was confessing and repenting.

As Bobson ate peanut butter and jam sandwiches with his Grandma, he was sad.  Grandma asked,  “Why so glum, chum?” Bobson, with remorse and tears in his eyes, told Grandma of the stolen chips.  Grandma was silent for a few seconds.  Bobson feared the worst.

Then Grandma got the biggest smile on her face “Marvelous! You have just faced the reality of who you are and what you have done. You have just done what many adults refuse to do! Tomorrow, if you choose, you can confess to Tailor, and ask for his forgiveness. Then think about what has been going on in your mind that you thought it was okay to steal. Then ask Jesus to help you think well as you turn away from wanting other people’s stuff.”

Bobson looked at his Grandma with a teary smile, “Grandma, it is going to be hard, but I think it will be worth it. It will be as if I am throwing my pride, like a cow pie, at the side of the barn.”

Grandma then pulled over her favourite well used board game.  “Now I believe we have a game of Sorry to play.” Bobson won 3 games in a row, much to Grandma’s consternation.

God sees the heart. Talk about God seeing the hearts of the people in this story.

Have you ever wanted something that wasn’t yours?

Do you think it was better for Bobson to immediately rethink what he had done and confess or should he wait a few years before he told his grandma and Tailor about the chips. Why?

Watch the video of Jesus healing and hanging about with tax collectors and sinners.

Jesus was telling people the good news of the Kingdom of God, which is life with God, what was once available only to the Jews, was now available to all people; Jews, Greeks, rich, poor, slave, free-men, women, men, sick, healthy and children.  This of course would include sinners, as all are. Jesus brought the ginormous power of the Kingdom close to people in a visible way by healing sick people and forgiving sins. He invited anyone who wished, to enter into that kingdom with their everyday lives.

The Romans were very good at ruling.  They would come into a country to “help out” and just never leave.  Here Matthew is a Roman Tax Collector. Collecting money for the Roman government

What was wrong with the sick man on the mat?

How did Jesus show God’s power through him?

What was the man’s name who sat at the tax collector booth?

Do you think the tax collector ever thought of stealing some of the coins he collected for himself?

Do you think most people need Jesus?

Do you think Jesus would ever force anyone to follow him?

Do you want Jesus to be in your every part of your daily life? Playing, chores, reading, learning?

Pray and ask God, chat with God. Tell him the happy things, then put all that good stuff in a party and celebrate. Streamers, music, balloons, dancing!!

Pray Tell him the bad stuff that people have done to you and you have done to others.  Lay the bad stuff at his feet. Ask him to take it.  Jesus will. He will come right there and listen to you.
